Ask tough questions before you sign anything

Recently an organization not affiliated with the state AFL-CIO, has been approaching state employees and telling them they that are the "new" state employee union. Our members tell us that their organizers are rude, pushy and evasive.

Before you put your name and address on anything, ask the hard questions.

  • What are their monthly dues and how will they be collected? (Nothing is free.)
  • Can a member drop anytime or will the member be locked into a long-term committment?
  • Why are they not affiliated with the state AFL–CIO?
  • Why does their organization "raid" other unions and use deceptive tactics to sign union members into paying dues to their organization?
  • Why do they lie about the two legitimate state employee unions, AFSCME and CWA, who both have a proven track record of working hard for state employees?
  • If they care so much for state employees, why does only AFSCME and CWA's name appear in testimony before the legislature on all the bills that matter to state employees or would directly impact our lives?
  • How many grievances or personnel board cases have they filed for state employees, and how many have they won?
  • Why have they been no shows when it was time to testify and offer rule changes to benefit state employees and protect their retirement?

On all the things that matter to state employees, this organization is nowhere to be found. So remember, before you sign anything or give them your name, home address, phone number, e-mail, etc., ask them these hard questions—better yet, ask them what they are doing with your personal information.

Organizations that are deceptive and untruthful from the start are not organizations that state employees want to be a part of. State employees deserve better. Remember, AFSCME AFL–CIO, is the state employee union that works as hard as you do. We are staffed by state employees for state employees.
