A tough fight ahead for 2008

Since AFSCME has staff who have good relationships with our elected leaders and agency directors, we became aware early on that we will have a large deficit in 2008.

We believe that this deficit is partly due to the decision by legislative leadership to give away a huge budget surplus in 2006 for tax breaks and corporate exemptions. That means that the current leadership at the legislature will use the bad situation they created as an excuse to tell state employees that there is no money for raises. They are threatening a hiring freeze in an already overburdened and underfilled state service. This could mean less staff to serve an exploding Arizona population.

The fight in 2008 will be difficult, and we as state employees must step up to the plate. Join AFSCME to show our strength in numbers and speak in a unified voice. Even more importantly, we must listen to AFSCME when they interview the candidates for legislative offices, and we must vote for the endorsed candidates AFSCME recommends as the best people to take state employees seriously and who have committed to put state employees first. When AFSCME completes its interview and endorsement process in early 2008, those endorsement lists will be available to state employees at the union hall and upon request.

Please make a difference in your lives and the lives of your family members by joining AFSCME now and investing in your future to make state service enjoyable and beneficial. You will have a voice to make decisions regarding your own career with the state. AFSCME is the proven state employee union that works as hard as you do, and when you join AFSCME you are investing in your future by having a strong collective group of other state employees advocating for better pay, good working conditions, retirement benefits, affordable heathcare, and job security. Don't wait; join your coworkers in state service who have already joined AFSCME, and change state service in Arizona forever.
